This week we went on a field trip to Chicano Park. Chicano Park is a place in San Diego that has been greatly affected by transportation routes dividing and ruining the look of the community. Something that I took away from this trip was that adding things such as bridges or freeways, will take away from the culture and sense of community within the neighborhood. It goes to show that urban planning will usually affect the lower income neighborhoods because they don't have much of a say in the political world, as well as the fact that they don't have the jobs that make those decisions . We also did our time-lapse with Spanish subtitles. This mini project was definitely a learning experience as far as Spanish as well as testing my problems solving skills. I thought this week went really well for me because I was able to learn more Spanish, through word reference as well as asking for help. I also encountered a problem on the time-lapse because of how close I live. There was never enough footage no matter how many different things I tried. So I ended up adding the videos all together and I thought it came out well to se the day-to-day journey and how different they can be, as far as traffic, or weather, or what other drivers I encounter on the drive. I was very proud of the final product. Something that I would've changed about last week was spending more time focusing on one of the murals. There was a lot to take in at Chicano Park and when we were given time to reflect on one of the murals, I took a lot of time to decide which one, by walking around when I could've been writing/reflecting. My reflection came out good but it would have overall been a lot easier if I would have done more work when it was originally assigned. This goes for all assignments.

These first two weeks were a very new experience. Having mixed grades and not as many friends in my class was different, but then led to meeting new people. Along with new people, I was also introduced to a new language. Spanish is going a lot better than I expected it to. I understand the concepts that are being taught. Also, my goal for Spanish this semester is to be able to read a book, which is what we are doing, so my goal will be accomplished. As far as Humanities goes, I really liked to topics about segregation and the discussions that have come out of the topics. Overall, I am very excited for the project. We spent a lot of the first two weeks building a community within the team. Along with that came learning about our responsibilities not only within the class but within our personal lives as well. My biggest takeaway from these weeks is all that we have learned about . I was very knowledgable about this topic beforehand, but I was able to explore specifically neighborhood segregation and further into how that affects politics.
Something I was successful with these two weeks was the seminar in Matt's class. I thought I prepared well for the seminar and although I didn't get to talk about everything that I found in the text, I found myself talking a lot more then usual in the seminar, and I really developed a bigger passion for the topic. Something I feel could be improved was my work management at home. I had a lot of activities to balance the second week because softball had started. I had two days and waited until the second day to even start. To start of the year like that was not the best decision, and I will definitely create more of a schedule in future weeks. |
