For Humanities, we have been given 3 chances to write 2 argumentative essays. This one was the second one, based on the Melian Dialogue. The question or prompt for this argumentative essay was "Were the Athenians justified in the the treatment of the Melians?" When the question was first posed, I didn't really understand what it meant. I asked for clarification on the question, specifically on what justified meant. After Mr. Aguirre explained that it was asking was their treatment reasonable or at least back up with rational motivation, it took me a little debating both sides to finally form my opinion. From there, I just backed up my opinion with evidence from the text that helped prove my point. From writing this, I not only learned about what happened to the Melians and how they reacted when the Athenians threatened, but I also learned about what type of person I am. Forming an opinion is sometimes not the easiest thing for me because I am very indecisive or concerned about what others think. With this essay, I formed my own opinion, debating both sides first, but not being too indecisive about it. It taught me about how I feel about any type of violence. Overall I really enjoyed writing this essay.
